Spaghetti? OMG

Happy Mother's Day to all the people who mother! We don't have a vintage recipe this week, we have a more viral sensation. Fortunately, this one may actually be popular with the kids. I originally found this recipe via Kalen Reacts on YouTube, which is worth a watch or 3. If you want to see the original video without Kalen talking over it (though I don't know why you'd bother), you can see it here.

The ingredients are simple, which is handy because if the recipe sucks you're only out about $4.

1 frozen pie crust

2 cans of Spaghettios (with meatballs, with hot dogs, or not, whatever you're into)

a little shredded mozzarella cheese

some milk for whatever reason

4 slices of bread

garlic powder

spreadable butter

Secret time: I actually like Spaghettios. When I was a kid, my mom hated the smell of them. So I'd go to my dad's and beg him to make them for me, all while pretending not to like them in front of my mom. I'm embarrassed to say this charade went on until college, when I could start buying them for myself. Then, SOMEbody snitched and my Grandpa's wife bought me this lovely serving dish as a joke, which happens to be the perfect dish for the Spaghettio Pie, so who's really winning here?

The steps to make the pie are simple too, you start with the pie crust. I pre-baked the pie crust at 350 for 10 minutes to crisp up the bottom. No one likes a soggy bottom. Next, I added one can of Spaghettios into the pie crust. Then I mixed in some milk (don't @ me I didn't make this recipe up) and some mozzarella cheese. The measurements in the video are unclear so just measure with your heart I guess? Anyway, I added the second can of Spaghettios and more cheese to finish up the "pie" layer.

The next step had you spread some butter on the bread, sprinkle with garlic powder and then, and I can't stress this enough, MASH IT WITH YOUR HANDS. So, I followed the directions, much to the interest of the dog and the rest of the family. Then, you cut the crusts off because you know, kids. You finish it up by putting the bread on top of the pie. Yep, you just lay it on there. And bake the whole thing at 350 for like 30 minutes, or until your bread on top is golden brown.

After the bread-mashing and washing up, I started on a backup meal of Cowboy Quiche and some peanut butter cookies. After several weeks of cooking this nonsense, I've learned my lesson.

The final product looked OK and tasted...fine. The bread on top was crispy, the pie crust was not. The Spaghettios tasted just like I remembered. My kid was a trooper and tasted it, but said she "didn't like the sauce". My husband said it tasted like Spaghettios with butter - I don't think he meant that in a good way. The dogs enjoyed the meatballs and ate them like they were going out of style.

Final Rating: Too much work. I can open a can of Spaghettios and throw some bread in the toaster and be done in 5 minutes instead of an hour. And for the LOVE, get yourself a rolling pin. Do NOT be smashing garlic bread with your hands. That is disrespectful to garlic bread.
